Daily deportations of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz began in 1944.
The slovak Jewish Underground “Bratislava Working Group” members,
rabbi Michael Ber Weissmandl and Gisi Fleischmann sent copies of
the “Auschwitz Report“ to the major Jewish organizations in the free world.
It was based on testimony of two escapees from Auschwitz – Vrba and Wetzler.
In the foreground of the painting we see George Mantello, a diplomat from San Salvador during the 2WW, who together with Pastor Paul Vogt initiated in Switzerland a press and church campaign to alert the world to the horrors of Auschwitz.
